The Baron of Heaven and Hell

A work of meticulously researched historical fiction. The novel explores the grand aspirations and sensational downfall of the infamous Gilles de Rais – loyal comrade of Joan of Arc, yet known to history as a heretic and a diabolical murderer – whose ambition to redeem Joan’s legacy and bring the Renaissance to France set him on a fatal collision course with the same medieval forces that burned her alive.

Was Gilles de Rais really innocent, as some scholars now believe? Was he, like Joan of Arc, framed and killed by the religious and political establishment, bent on preserving the status quo?
